The Division of Pediatric Cardiology collaborates closely with the Congenital and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Program in the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, led by Emile Bacha, MD. Together we offer groundbreaking, state-of-the-art cardiac care to all patients and families who are affected by cardiac illness or disease. However, because only a small percentage of pediatric cardiology fellows will ultimately perform cardiac catheterization procedures at the completion of their general pediatric cardiology training, the concept that proficiency with physical catheter manipulation and specific interventional catheterization techniques is mandatory to the general. Interventional cardiology is an area of medicine within the subspecialty of cardiology that uses specialized imaging and other diagnostic techniques to evaluate blood flow and pressure in the coronary arteries and chambers of the heart, as well as technical procedures and medications to treat abnormalities that impair the function of the cardiovascular system. The pediatric cardiology team at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital provide full-spectrum cardiac care for patients ranging from fetal life through young adulthood. Closure of a Very Large Patent Ductus Arteriosus Using the Amplatzer Duct Occluder. August 1, 2008. Closure of the small to moderate sized patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is accomplished at most large pediatric heart centers by transcatheter techniques, most often by inserting thrombogenic fabric-stranded. Interventional paediatric cardiology mainly involves dilatation of stenotic vessels or valves and occlusion of abnormal communications. Many transcatheter techniques—such as balloon dilatation, stent implantation, and coil occlusion—have been adapted from adult practice.
